Why Many Massage Therapists Don’t Accept Insurance (And Why I Still Do)

It’s no secret in the massage therapy world: many therapists avoid taking clients with health insurance. Why? Because dealing with insurance companies can be a headache. Claims get denied far too often, leaving the therapist in a tough spot—either creating a superbill for the client or taking a financial hit.
Unfortunately, this also puts clients in a difficult position. Many are counting on their insurance to cover the session, and when it doesn’t, they’re faced with unexpected out-of-pocket costs they weren’t prepared for.
That being said—I’m not one of those therapists who runs from insurance. I doaccept it, and I welcome clients who want to use their benefits. The more, the merrier! But I want to be transparent: if your claim is denied, you may receive a bill or a superbill for the session. That document can be submitted directly to your insurance provider for reimbursement, and it becomes your responsibility to handle that process.
It’s frustrating that we live in a system where insurance companies have such control over what care gets covered—but this is the reality we’re working in.
